Rhinoplasty is a cosmetic term that describes the “nose job.” Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure done to change the shape of your nose. This is done by modifying the cartilage or bone in the nose. Rhinoplasty is one of the commonest types of plastic surgery.

Most people who opt for a rhinoplasty procedure do so when they sustain an injury on the nose. Rhinoplasty is also done to correct breathing disorders, or even a birth defect. You can also use Rhinoplasty to correct the physical appearance of your nose (if you are not pleased with it).

With a Rhinoplasty, your cosmetic surgeon can make the following changes to your nose:

  • The size of your nose can be changed
  • A change in the angle
  • The tip may be reshaped
  • The nose bridge may be straightened
  • The nostrils may be narrowed

If you wish to do a Rhinoplasty for cosmetic purposes (rather than for health reasons), then you should allow your nasal bone to be fully developed before going for it. The girls can do it from 15 years of age, however, boys will have to wait longer than that. But for health purposes, rhinoplasty can be done at a younger age.

Every surgical procedure has its own risks, and rhinoplasty is not an exception. General risks associated with surgery include bleeding, infection, or reaction to anesthesia. Risks associated with rhinoplasty include:

  • Nosebleeds
  • Difficulties in breathing
  • Scars
  • An asymmetrical nose

In some cases, patients may be unsatisfied with their surgery. If you want to go for a corrective surgery, you’ll have to wait for your nose to heal fully. This may take up to a year.

The first step towards preparing for a Rhinoplasty is to inquire from your surgeon whether you are qualified for the procedure or not. You should discuss with your surgeon why you want the procedure, and what you’ll accomplish by having it.

After consulting your surgeon, he or she will go through your medical history. They may also inquire from you whether you are on any medications or not, or whether you have any underlying medical condition. If you have a serious medical condition, such as hemophilia (characterized by excessive bleeding), then you may be asked to go for an elective surgery.

A physical examination will be done. The skin on your nose (both inside and outside) will be closely examined to determine the necessary changes to be done. You may also be asked to do some blood tests.

The surgeon will also check whether you have need for an additional surgery. For instance, some people may require a chin augmentation alongside a rhinoplasty. A chin augmentation gives your chin a better definition.

During the consultation, photographs of your nose will be taken from different angles. These photos will help during the surgery. It will also be used to assess the long-term implications of the surgery.

Ensure that you are fully aware of the costs of the surgery. If rhinoplasty is done for cosmetic reasons, then you may have to do a full payment for it. Most cosmetic rhinoplasties are not covered by insurance.

Analgesics such as aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided at least two before and after the surgery. These painkillers impede the clotting process and causes more bleeding. If you are currently on medications, please let your surgeon know about it.  They will let you know whether you should continue with it, or discontinue the medications.

Rhinoplasty is slow to heal in smokers. The nicotine in cigarettes causes constriction of the blood vessels in the nose. This reduces oxygen supply and blood flow to the tissues. You can hasten the healing process by avoiding smoking.

Rhinoplasty is done in an outpatient surgery or a hospital. You will be given a general or local anesthesia.

Once the anesthesia has taken effect, cuts will be made inside or between your nostrils. The skin on your bone or cartilage will be separated and then the reshaping will be done. If there is any need for extra cartilage on your new nose, then it will be gotten from the inside of your nose or from the ear. If there’s need for more, then you may be given a bone graft or an implant.

A rhinoplasty lasts for an hour or two. A complex surgery may take longer.

A rhinoplasty is a very easy and safe procedure. However, the healing process can take some time. Your nose tip is very sensitive and can remain swollen and numb for some time. Full recovery may take a few weeks, but you will feel the effects for months. It may take up to a year for you to experience a 100% recovery.
